What do Anniversaries Stand for?

A million gigabytes!! This is just an approximate storage space of your brain. Memory has devised interesting concepts of remembering friends and foe, memorising days and dates and tagging everything mobile and immobile. From this tagging, days remembered are marked for future references : My Birthday, My Graduation day, My First day at job, My First Crush, My First Kiss,  My Day of Commitment, Her Birthday,His Birthday,My Breakup Day, My Patch-Up day, My Marriage day, My Anniversary day and a whole lot of days afterwards!

This segregation of days is sacred and must be remembered for not ending into a serious emotional wrecking. The females are especially honoured by the position of the magical memory queen. They are one meticulous species with a well-organised date book. Their firm feet in this field often tend to shake their male counterparts. An average man often wonders if she dies before me,  will she still haunt me for not wishing her our nth  anniversary of holding hands!!? 😦

Well out of all the days, anniversaries are the most celebrated ones. Their joy is as much as hers as his(not in one-sided relations 😛 ). First anniversaries are special. They are tender, fresh, enthusiastic and romantic. Second ones are special too because then the relationship grows a little beyond the boundaries of infatuation and lust. Gradually, the third, fourth and anniversaries falling hereafter are monotonous and predictable but much more  realistic. These boring anniversaries prepare you for the real spirit of togetherness – compassionate yet not amorous.

After few years, spending the time together turns into investing and harvesting. Birthday gifts turn into a very nice way of bringing something useful and new in the house – like gifting a car or oven. Sharing the joy of lighting Diwali candles together will be more about investing in gold and silver.  Anniversaries turn into quiet eat outs, mocking each other (maybe taunting about the spread over mascara or protruding belly! 😀 ). Older anniversaries will have to be a hosted dinner with invitations dropped for people who hardly matter and people who might matter in future. So, what do anniversaries really stand for??

In budding relations, anniversaries stand for assurance and possession while in ageing relations, anniversaries are all about the days apart from the special days. The regular and predictable movements of each other embark deeper meanings on a relation. Older anniversaries are more about marvelling on the long-term of withstanding all, together.

In relations which dangle somewhere between the suspense of strangeness and boredom of all known, anniversaries stand for “frank emotions”. On these 3-4 years old anniversaries you might not wish each other even after remembering. This will be a point, where you will stand with each other, shoulder to shoulder. Much more than strangers and companions…. and from here on the days will not be yours. They will be “OURS“-  Our boring, daily, regular days!
